Nokia E61i Review
Design
Nokia has made subtle design changes to the E61i, enhancing the back with a sturdier aluminium case and changing the all-silver design by introducing “mocha” (purpley-brown) highlights around the edges. Although it’s quite wide — its dimensions are 117mm by 70mm by 13.9mm — it’s comfortable to hold in your palm and thin enough to slip into a pocket.
Features
Aside from the addition of a 2-megapixel camera, Nokia’s upped the battery life to 400 hours of standby and nine hours of talk. Connectivity options are still extensive, with the E61i supporting quad-band GSM networks and 3G — great for travellers — Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and for some reason that escapes us, infrared. Corporate mobile e-mail solutions such as Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email, Good Mobile Messaging, Mail for Exchange, Seven Mobile Mail and BlackBerry Connect to turn the E61i in to a push e-mail device are supported. There’s also the video camera, a music player and a video player for a bit of fun.
Quickoffice and Adobe Acrobat Reader are onboard for viewing and editing documents, and Nokia also includes an application called Teams that lets you set up groups of contacts for conference calls and mass messaging. Unfortunately USB connections still require a proprietary Nokia Pop-Port cable — no borrowing someone’s spare mini-USB cable if it goes missing.
Nokia’s changed from miniSD on the E61i to the smaller microSD memory format on the E61i, with a 256MB card bundled with our review model. It’s hot-swappable once you remove the battery cover..
Performance
Nokia seems to have addressed most of the downsides we found with its predecessor, namely a fiddly joystick, lack of camera and the menu layout. The 2-megapixel camera has quite a shutter lag, but we were impressed with the clarity of low-light shots, even if they were a little noisy. Battery life with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth switched off was decent at four days during normal use, dropping considerably with wireless use.
One thing we were a little disappointed about — while it’s a 3G phone, Nokia hasn’t added support for faster downloads through HSDPA. If you’ve got a Nokia E61, there’s nothing in the E61i that warrants an upgrade. If you’re considering a 3G smartphone, however, the E61i is a formidable work tool for any business user or traveller.

Paypal days maybe numbered
The days of PayPal’s dominance over casual payments online are changing rapidly. A little over a year ago, Google unveiled its Checkout service, which has become an increasingly popular way to purchase items from various online retailers using a single account. Today, Amazon.com is unveiling its own payment program that lets Amazon.com users purchase items or services using their Amazon.com account credentials and billing information.
The new program is called “Flexible Payment Service”, or FPS, and is launching with an invite-only API for developers who want to integrate the new payment service. What does this mean to you, the user? If you’ve got an Amazon.com account, you won’t have to create a special log-in or give up your personal information to participating sites in order to make a purchase. Considering how many users Amazon.com has, and the one-click nature of its Web-shopping model, this is kind of a big deal. Of course, this doesn’t come free. While there are no start-up charges for users or sites, Amazon collects a small fee for each transaction, from purchases as small, or smaller than $.01. The rates are listed on the FPS info page, and from the looks of things seem like a better deal for smaller transactions when compared to Google Checkout and PayPal.
One of the first sites out the gate with Amazon FPS integration is FreshBooks, an invoicing service we covered last year. Expect to see many others in the coming months as Amazon opens up the beta.

Google Maps now includes traffic in drive time
We all know that online maps have their faults. One of them is that they tend to be optimistic.
Google and Yahoo maps offer real-time traffic data with color coding on the map of the congested areas. But we all knew that the driving time given on the map was not reliable because it wasn’t factoring in the actual traffic conditions. Well, Google has fixed that. Now, Google Maps offers a time estimate if driving in heavy traffic, such as rush hour.
For instance, if I plan to drive from the CNET offices in downtown San Francisco to Google’s headquarters in Mountain View, Calif., (which I do often) the map tells me it’s 35.8 miles and should take about 41 minutes, but then underneath that estimate it now says “up to 55 mins in traffic.” That also sounds a bit optimistic, but at least it’s more realistic than 41 minutes. In reality, I give myself an hour.

Unfortunately, other than red, green or yellow highlights on the maps, they don’t (yet) show you exactly what the roadway looks like and where exactly the blockages are. For the traffic obsessed, there is a way to simulate traffic congestion, according to Winding Road blog. The site warns that the microsimulation Java applet is slow and somewhat buggy.

‘TMNT’ game may leave you fighting boredom

Either Ubisoft is running out of ideas or they were so busy working on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game they didn’t realize they plagiarized their own material.
Based on the movie of the same name, TMNT offers virtually the same game play as found in the popular Prince of Persia series, also from the Montreal-based studio, be it the acrobatic fighting and fancy swordplay or dramatic slow-motion sequences and the ability to run along walls.
In TMNT, you can play as one of the four fighting turtles — Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo — each of whom has his own unique skill and weapon. Raphael, for example, can use his twin Sai weapons to climb up walls, even up the side of brick buildings. Donatello, however, can fight off baddies with his bo staff and also use it to vault over large crevices below New York City’s surface. At times, the turtles can work together during combat sequences, such as one spinning the other around like a helicopter blade to take down enemies, or turtles can tag-team to access hard-to-reach areas by combining their abilities. MySpace: No Space for PhotoBucket

Social-networking giant MySpace.com on Wednesday blocked Photobucket videos and photo slide shows from being uploaded to its pages.
MySpace will no longer let users post such content from Photobucket in their profiles, blogs or comments section. MySpace said Photobucket had violated MySpace’s terms by encouraging users to post advertisements — specifically to an ad campaign for the upcoming feature film Spider-Man 3 — in their videos. MySpace forbids third-party vendors from advertising on its site. Read more about it in this CNet Article.
